What governs a joist span
Five inputs set an allowable span: species and grade (which fix the wood’s bending strength Fb and stiffness E per the NDS design values), the member size, the on-center spacing, the design load, and the deflection limit. Floor joists are checked two ways — stiffness (L/360 deflection under live load, usually the governing check) and strength (bending under live plus dead load, with the repetitive-member and size factors applied) — and the shorter answer wins. That is why spans don’t scale linearly: doubling spacing from 12" to 24" costs roughly 20%, not half, on deflection-governed cells, and strength quietly takes over on some deep-member cells. The IRC prints the results as Table R502.3.1(1) for sleeping areas (30 psf live) and R502.3.1(2) for living areas (40 psf live), both at 10 psf dead in the columns this tool carries; for anything the tables don’t cover, R502.3 itself sends you to the AWC Span Tables for Joists and Rafters.

How these numbers were verified
Span tables are safety-critical, so this tool shipped for months with no numbers at all rather than the unverified table it inherited — and that caution was vindicated: the old table overstated SPF 2x10 at 16" by nearly a foot (16.4 ft vs the verified 15′-5″). The published values were then extracted twice, independently — once from IRC code-table renderings and once from the AWC Wood Frame Construction Manual with SFPA’s post-2013 Southern Pine tables — and machine-compared cell by cell: 126 of 128 cells agreed exactly. The two that differed (by an inch, on rounding-boundary and apparent code-misprint cells) are published as the IRC-printed value, which is both what an inspector enforces and the shorter, conservative figure. Every cell is pinned by an automated test so no value can drift silently.

How far can a 2x10 floor joist span?
It depends on species, spacing, and floor use — which is exactly what this calculator looks up from the verified IRC tables. At No. 2 grade, 16 in. o.c., over a living area (40 psf live): SPF reaches 15'-5", Douglas Fir-Larch 15'-7", Hem-Fir 15'-2", and Southern Pine 14'-0". Over a sleeping area (30 psf) the same SPF 2x10 stretches to 17'-2". A one-size answer is always wrong — the same 2x10 spans meaningfully differently as those inputs change, and every value here is the IRC R502.3.1 figure at 10 psf dead and L/360.
What determines how far a floor joist can span?
Five things: the species and grade of the lumber (which set its bending strength and stiffness), the depth of the joist, the on-center spacing, the design live and dead loads, and the deflection limit — L/360 under live load is the common floor criterion. Span tables bake all five into one lookup, which is why you have to match every column, not just the joist size, when you read one.
Does joist spacing change the allowable span?
Yes — tightening the spacing from 24 to 16 to 12 in. o.c. puts less tributary load on each joist and lengthens the allowable span at every size. When a layout just misses at 16 in. o.c., the usual options are a deeper joist, a stronger species or grade, tighter spacing, or shortening the span with a beam or bearing wall. Check each option against the span tables; the trade-offs are rarely symmetrical in cost.
What loads do residential floor span tables assume?
The common residential floor case is 40 psf live plus 10 psf dead, with a 30 psf live load permitted for sleeping rooms under the IRC. Heavy finishes — tile over a mortar bed, stone, large aquariums — can push the dead load past the table assumption, and then the tabulated span no longer applies. Confirm the load case and the table against the building code adopted in your jurisdiction.
What does #2 SPF mean, and why No. 2 grade only?
Grade No. 2 lumber from the spruce-pine-fir species group — the most common framing stock in much of North America. This calculator covers No. 2 in all four major species groups (SPF, Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, and Southern Pine — note Southern Pine's spans reflect the June 2013 design-value revision, so older tables read longer than current code allows). Select Structural and No. 1 grades span farther but are priced and stocked differently; their rows are in the same IRC tables and the AWC STJR. The grade stamp on the lumber tells you both the species group and the grade — verify it matches what you looked up.
How were this calculator's span values verified?

Can I use floor-joist spans for deck joists?
No. Deck joists are sized from their own tables — the IRC deck provisions (R507) — which account for wet-service conditions, preservative-treated species, and deck-specific loads and cantilevers. Interior floor tables will be wrong for a deck, sometimes unconservatively so. Use the deck tables or an engineer, and verify against the code adopted in your jurisdiction.
