How this calculator works
Slope math is straight proportion — a slope in inches of fall per foot of run, applied over the run:
fall (in) = slope (in/ft) × run (ft) · grade % = slope ÷ 12 × 100
The code side is the part worth getting right. The IPC (Table 704.1) tiers the minimum by pipe size: 2-1/2" and smaller must fall at least 1/4" per foot, 3" through 6" at least 1/8" per foot, and 8" and larger at least 1/16" per foot. The UPC (708.1) is stricter: 1/4" per foot (2%) for every size, with a 1/8"-per-foot (1%) exception for 4" and larger piping only where the standard grade is impractical and the AHJ approves it first — the IPC’s 1/8" tier is never a by-right allowance under the UPC. The pass/fail check above uses the IPC tiers; steeper is generally fine (many drains run at 1/4" even where 1/8" would pass), and drainage should also keep roughly 2 fps of scour velocity so solids stay in suspension.
Worked example
A 3" sanitary line runs 40 ft to the stack. You want the standard 1/4" per foot:
- Fall: 0.25 × 40 = 10.00 in — the far end sits 10" lower, i.e. 0.833 ft.
- Grade: 0.25 ÷ 12 × 100 = 2.08%.
- Minimum check: a 3" pipe needs only 1/8" per foot under IPC 704.1, so 1/4" per foot passes with margin. If ceiling depth forced the run down to 1/8", the fall would be 5.00 in — still code, but with no room left.

Frequently asked questions
How much fall does a 4 inch sewer pipe need per foot?
Under the IPC, pipe 3" through 6" may run at a minimum of 1/8" per foot (IPC 704.1). The UPC's baseline minimum is 1/4" per foot for horizontal drainage, allowing 1/8" per foot on 4" and larger only where 1/4" is impractical and the authority having jurisdiction approves. These are different rules — verify against the plumbing code adopted in your jurisdiction. This calculator's minimum-slope check applies the IPC tiers.
How do I calculate total fall on a drain run?
Multiply the run length in feet by the slope in inches per foot. A 60 ft building sewer at 1/4" per foot needs 15 inches (1.25 ft) of fall from one end to the other. That is what this calculator returns, along with the slope as a percentage.
What is the minimum slope for a 2 inch drain pipe?
1/4" per foot. The IPC requires 1/4" per foot for pipe 2-1/2" and smaller (IPC 704.1), and the UPC's general minimum for horizontal drainage is also 1/4" per foot, so both major codes agree at this size. The calculator flags any selected slope below the minimum for the pipe size you enter.
Is more slope always better on a drain?
No — but not for the reason usually given. The old claim that steep pipe lets water outrun the solids is poorly supported by drainage research; the real costs of extra slope are burial depth, elevation budget, and awkward fitting transitions. What the minimum slope actually protects is scour — roughly 2 fps of flow velocity so solids stay in suspension. And piping that reaches 45 degrees or more from horizontal is treated as vertical under the codes, with different rules entirely.
Does this calculator check UPC minimum slopes?
Not yet. The minimum-slope check runs against the IPC tiers — 1/4" per foot at 2-1/2" and smaller, 1/8" at 3" through 6", 1/16" at 8" and larger — and if you select UPC as the code family the tool shows a note that the check displayed is still IPC 704.1. UPC minimums differ, so verify against the plumbing code adopted in your jurisdiction.
What is a 2% slope in inches per foot?
Just under 1/4" per foot: 2% works out to 0.24" of fall per foot of run. Going the other way, 1/4" per foot is 2.08%, 1/8" per foot is 1.04%, and 1/16" per foot is 0.52%. Civil drawings often call slope in percent while plumbing codes speak in inches per foot — this calculator reports both so you can check one against the other.
Method: fall = slope × run (pure proportion); minimum-grade check per IPC Table 704.1 (values unchanged 2015–2024). The UPC differs: 708.1 requires 1/4" per foot (2%) for all sizes, relaxable to 1% only for 4" and larger with prior AHJ approval, and 718.1 applies the same rule to building sewers. Since the 2018 IPC, piping upstream of a grease interceptor must fall at not less than 1/4" per foot regardless of size.
