How this calculator works
Condensing units ship charged for a standard line-set length — often 15 ft, printed on the nameplate or in the installation manual. Line set beyond that holds refrigerant the factory charge did not account for:
added charge (oz) = (line-set ft − pre-charge ft) × oz/ft for the liquid-line size
The adder is keyed to the liquid line because that is where the mass lives: dense liquid refrigerant fills it, while the suction line carries low-density vapor. That is also why the per-foot value scales steeply with line diameter — a 3/8" liquid line takes several times the charge per foot of a 1/4" line. If the line set is shorter than the pre-charge length, this calculator returns zero added charge and never tells you to add refrigerant; whether to remove any is a per-manufacturer instruction. The per-foot values are R-410A-typical and flagged for verification against OEM data — different refrigerants have different liquid densities, so R-454B, R-32, and R-22 adders must come from the OEM tables until verified values land here. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification, and A2L refrigerants (R-454B, R-32) carry additional handling requirements.
Worked example
A 50 ft line set on an R-410A unit pre-charged for 15 ft, with a 3/8" liquid line (the calculator’s defaults):
- Extra length: 50 − 15 = 35 ft.
- Added charge: 35 × 2.0 oz/ft = 70.0 oz.
- In pounds: 70 ÷ 16 = 4.38 lb — weigh that in, then verify by subcooling (TXV/EEV) or superheat (fixed orifice) at the manufacturer’s targets.

Do I need to add refrigerant for a longer line set?

Why is the added charge based on the liquid line and not the suction line?

Can I use a calculated line charge instead of weighing in and checking superheat or subcooling?
No. The line-length adder is only a starting estimate — it never replaces weighing in the charge on the scale and then verifying it under load: by subcooling on TXV/EEV systems, or superheat on fixed-orifice systems, at the manufacturer's target values. How many ounces of refrigerant per foot of line set?

What if my line set is shorter than the length the factory charge covers?
This calculator returns zero added charge — it never tells you to add refrigerant for a short line set. Some manufacturers instruct you to remove refrigerant per foot under the pre-charge length, others say no adjustment is needed within a stated range; follow the installation manual. Either way, final verification is still by weight and by superheat/subcooling.
Are the per-foot values the same for R-454B and R-32 as for R-410A?
No — liquid density differs between refrigerants, so ounces per foot differ too.
