How this calculator works
area + waste = room ft² × (1 + waste%) · boxes = ⌈(area + waste) ÷ box coverage⌉
This is pure arithmetic on your inputs — no hidden product table, because box coverage is product-specific (common cartons run roughly 15–30 ft² depending on plank size and thickness) and the carton label governs. The waste factor absorbs end cuts, the ripped last row, defective planks, and stagger requirements; box counts always round up, and buying one deliberate extra box for attic stock is standard practice — future repairs need the same dye lot.
Worked example
A 500 ft² room in a plank sold at 20 ft² per box, 10% waste:
- Area with waste: 500 × 1.10 = 550 ft².
- Boxes: 550 ÷ 20 = 27.5 → 28 boxes.
- Underlayment or pad, where the product needs it, covers the same 550 ft² — order rolls per that product’s coverage.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
10% is the standard allowance for a straight lay in a simple room, and it's this calculator's default. Bump it to 15% for diagonal installs, rooms with lots of jogs and closets, or wide-plank product where a bad cut kills a whole board, and higher still for herringbone or other patterns. Waste factors are estimates — the right number depends on the layout and the installer.
How many square feet are in a box of flooring?
It varies by product, which is why this calculator asks for it instead of assuming. Luxury vinyl plank cartons commonly run around 18–24 ft², laminate around 16–25 ft², and hardwood anywhere from 18 to 30+ ft² depending on width and length. Read the coverage off the carton or the product spec sheet and enter that exact number — two SKUs from the same brand can differ.
How do I measure a room for flooring?
Measure length × width at the longest and widest points, and break irregular rooms into rectangles you add together. Include closets, pantries, and the area under appliances and toe-kick-free cabinets if the flooring runs there, and don't deduct for kitchen islands or vanities unless they're large — the cuts around them generate waste anyway. Enter the total as the room area.
Should I buy an extra box of flooring beyond the calculated amount?
Yes. The calculator already rounds up to whole boxes, but one additional carton is cheap insurance: it covers a miscut day-of, and it leaves attic stock from the same dye lot for future repairs — a plank bought two years later will not match. This matters most on printed products like LVP and laminate where lots visibly shift.
Does this calculator include underlayment?
No — it counts flooring cartons only. Underlayment is sized off the same room area, so order rolls to cover the calculated square footage plus a small overlap allowance per the manufacturer's instructions. Check the product first: many vinyl planks and some laminates ship with an attached pad, and putting a second underlayment beneath them can void the warranty.
Method: boxes = room area × (1 + waste) ÷ carton coverage, rounded up — pure arithmetic with the coverage taken from the carton label (product-specific; no built-in table). Waste is user-chosen: ~10% for straight-lay rectangles, 15%+ for diagonal lay, herringbone and patterns, many closets and jogs, or rooms whose dimensions fight the plank length. Transition strips, trim, underlayment/pad, and subfloor prep are separate line items, and acclimation and expansion-gap requirements come from the manufacturer’s instructions, not the count.
