ABOUT THESE TOOLS
Finish trades live on coverage rates: square feet per sheet, per gallon, per box, per bag. These calculators turn measured areas into order quantities — drywall sheet counts with screws and tape from wall and ceiling area, boxes of joint compound by finish level, paint gallons per coat from surface area and spread rate, tile counts with thinset and grout from tile size and waste factor, flooring boxes with underlayment from room area, and insulation batts or blown coverage from area and target R-value.
The reference standards are worth knowing when a spec cites them: gypsum finishing levels 0 through 5 are defined in GA-214, with ASTM C840 governing application, TCNA Handbook methods and ANSI A108 govern tile installation, paint coverage runs off the manufacturer’s spread rate (commonly around 350 square feet per gallon on smooth walls), and required insulation R-values come from the IECC climate-zone tables. Waste is the variable that sinks finish takeoffs, so each tool exposes its waste factor instead of hiding it. All free, in the browser, no login required.
