How this calculator works

Pitch is rise per 12" of run, and the slope factor is the hypotenuse of that triangle divided by the run — every plan foot of roof is that many feet of actual surface:

slope factor = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12 · roof area = footprint × slope factor · squares = area ÷ 100

There is no code table behind this and the page cites none — it is trigonometry, and the 1-square-per-100-ft² unit is definitional. The footprint should be the plan area the roof actually covers, including eave overhangs (a 2 ft overhang on a 40 ft wall adds real roof). For a simple gable the whole footprint shares one pitch; for multi-pitch roofs run each section at its own pitch and add the results.

Worked example

A 1,500 ft² footprint under a 6/12 roof:

  1. Slope factor: √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 = 1.1180, a 26.57° roof.
  2. Roof area: 1,500 × 1.1180 = 1,677.1 ft² — 177 ft² more than the footprint.
  3. Squares: 1,677.1 ÷ 100 = 16.77 squares before any waste factor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate roof area from the square footage of my house?

You can't use living area directly — you need the footprint under the roof, measured to the outside of the eaves so overhangs are included, then multiplied by the slope factor for the pitch. That's the method this calculator uses: roof surface = plan footprint × √(1 + (rise/12)²). A two-story house with 2,400 ft² of living area may only have a 1,200 ft² footprint, so start from the plan outline, not the listing square footage.

How many squares is my roof?

A roofing square is 100 ft² of roof surface, so divide the true sloped area by 100. A 1,500 ft² footprint at 6:12 pitch is 1,500 × 1.1180 ≈ 1,677 ft² of surface, or about 16.8 squares. Note that suppliers sell by the square (and bundles), so the number you order from will also include a waste factor on top of this figure.

What is a roof pitch multiplier (slope factor)?

It's the ratio of sloped length to horizontal run: √(1 + (rise/12)²), where rise is the pitch in inches per 12 inches of run. A 4:12 roof has a factor of 1.0541, 6:12 is 1.1180, 9:12 is 1.25, and 12:12 is 1.4142. Only the up-slope dimension of a roof plane stretches (the eave-to-eave dimension stays flat), so multiplying plan area by the factor once converts footprint to true surface area.

Does footprint × slope factor work for hip roofs?

Yes — as long as every plane has the same pitch, the surface area of a hip roof equals the footprint times the slope factor, exactly like a gable. Hips and valleys change the cutting waste, not the geometry of the area. Where the shortcut breaks down is mixed pitches (say a 4:12 porch on an 8:12 main): split the footprint into sections and run each pitch separately.

How much waste should I add on top of the calculated area?

The calculator returns net surface area with no waste. As estimates: 5–10% for a simple gable, 10–15% once hips and valleys enter, and 15%+ for cut-up roofs with dormers, turrets, or many penetrations — diagonal cuts at hips and valleys are what drive it. Waste is a judgment call per roof, not a constant, so carry it as its own line in the estimate.

Method: roof area = plan footprint × slope factor, slope factor = √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12, 1 square = 100 ft² (definitional). Pure geometry with no code citation. The result is the surface area of the sloped planes over the footprint you enter — it does not add waste, hips/valleys cut loss, starter or cap coverage, or overhangs you left out of the footprint, and complex roofs should be run section by section.
