The field rate is sourced: GAF Timberline HDZ covers 33.3 ft² per bundle — three bundles per square — and Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration covers 32.8 ft² per bundle, so three OC bundles cover 98.4 ft², slightly under a full square. Three per square is the standard planning figure, not a guarantee; the waste percentage absorbs that gap, and premium or specialty shingles can run 4–5 bundles per square. Starter (≈100 lf/bundle) and ridge cap (≈35 lf/bundle) are planning figures — starter products run ≈100–120 lf and ridge caps ≈20–35 lf per bundle depending on the product, so confirm lf-per-bundle on the spec sheet before ordering.
Worked example
A 2,000 ft² roof surface with 10% waste, 120 lf of eave, and 60 lf of ridge and hip:
- Squares: 2,000 ÷ 100 × 1.10 = 22.00.
- Field bundles: 22 × 3 = 66.
- Starter: 120 ÷ 100 → 2 bundles; ridge cap: 60 ÷ 35 → 2 bundles (both round up). Total order: 70 bundles.

Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three bundles per square (100 ft²) is the standard for three-tab and most architectural shingles, and it's what this calculator uses. It is manufacturer-specific, though: heavyweight architectural, triple-laminate, and some designer lines run 4–6 bundles per square. The coverage is printed on the wrapper — if your product isn't 3 per square, scale the field-bundle result accordingly.
How many squares is a 2,000 square foot roof?
A square is 100 ft² of roof surface, so 2,000 ft² of true sloped area is 20 squares before waste — with 10% waste, this calculator carries 22 squares and rounds the bundles up. The key word is surface area: if all you have is the house footprint, multiply it by the pitch's slope factor first (the roof area calculator does this), because a 2,000 ft² footprint at 8:12 is really 24 squares of surface.
What waste factor should I use for shingles?
These are estimates, driven by how cut-up the roof is: 5–10% for a simple gable, 10–15% with hips and valleys, and 15% or more for complex roofs with dormers and many penetrations. The default of 10% suits an average roof. Hips and valleys cost you diagonal cuts on every course, which is why complexity, not size, drives the number.
Do I need starter shingles, or can I cut three-tabs?
You need a starter course along the eaves — its sealant line is what keeps the first course from lifting. Cutting the tabs off three-tab shingles is the traditional method; dedicated starter-strip bundles are faster and typically cover about 100–120 lineal feet each, which is why this calculator figures one starter bundle per 100 lf of eave. Many manufacturers also call for starter up the rakes for wind warranty — if you run it there, add the rake footage to the eave input.
How much ridge cap do I need?
Measure every ridge and hip in lineal feet and add them together — hips take cap just like ridges. Coverage per bundle varies by product, roughly 25–35 lf depending on the cap profile and its exposure; this calculator uses one bundle per 35 lf, so check the wrapper and adjust if your cap covers less. Cutting caps from three-tabs works with three-tab roofs, but laminated shingles are not made to be cut into caps — use a matching cap product.
Does this calculator include underlayment, nails, and flashing?
No — it counts shingle bundles only: field, starter, and ridge cap. Underlayment has its own calculator on this site (rolls from area and overlap), and you'll still need drip edge, flashing, roofing nails (four per shingle typical, six in high-wind fastening patterns), and ice barrier where the climate or the adopted code calls for it. Treat those as separate takeoff lines.
