ABOUT THESE TOOLS

Dirt changes volume every time you touch it, and that’s where earthwork estimates go wrong. A bank yard swells when excavated and shrinks when compacted, so the same material is three different numbers depending on where it sits. These calculators keep the states straight: bank yards to dig with swell applied for trucking, net import or export from average cut and fill depths, trench spoil with bedding and backfill quantities, tons of gravel, sand, or base from area and depth, lift counts for compacted fill, and direct bank–loose–compacted conversions using standard shrink and swell factors by soil type.

Quantities are only half of site work — OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P governs excavation safety, including sloping, benching, and protective systems for trenches five feet and deeper, and nothing here substitutes for a competent person’s call on the ground conditions. Use these tools for takeoffs, truck counts, and material orders; use the standard and your geotech report for how the hole gets dug. Free, browser-based, no login.
